Robert Frank: The Americans

Overview

Design a poster and a brochure for Robert Frank’s The Americans exposition at the SFMOMA.

Concept

Robert Frank’s documentation of America during the Great Depression and segregation era demonstrated American life in a real and unfiltered way. To complement the reflective and honest tone of his photographs, I decided to apply a muted color scheme that alluded to the colors of the American flag. To appeal to a modern adult audience, minimalist typography and geometric elements were layout out atop a modular grid structure. Additionally, the brochure uses the folds to enhance the some of the themes of Frank’s photographs—a divided nation who’s real identity is different than the one it claims to be.
